: World War II : 1938 :

GERMAN TROOPS MOVE INTO AUSTRIA :

Date : 12th March 1938.

The Anschluss (Union). Hitler moves German troops into Austria and proclaims Austria as part of the Third Reich.

THE MUNICH MEETING :

Date : 29/30th September 1938.

The German Führer Adolf Hitler, Italy's Benito Mussolini, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and representing France was Edouard Daladier, meet in Munich in the hope of avoiding a European war erupting. Czechoslovakia is compelled to relinquish its Sudeten-German speaking districts to Germany, as demanded by Hitler.

The Munich Agreement is signed and Hitler is appeased, and armed invasion by Nazi Germany is avoided.

'PEACE IN OUR TIME' :

Date : 30th September 1938.

British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returns to Britain after the Munich meeting, in which an agreement is signed to avoid war between European powers. Chamberlain believes the meeting to be a success, and war has been avoided. He states that there will be 'Peace in our time'.

HITLER TAKES THE SUDETENLAND :

Date : December 1938.

German troops move into the Sudetenland, as agreed at the Munich meeting. Hitler annexes the German speaking territory from Czechoslovakia and makes it part of the Third Reich.

The appeasement, it's hoped, will quell Hitler's desire for territory, but comes at a price as Britain and France forsake Czechoslovakia.
