With Germans at the gates of Paris the
French Government surrendered. General Weygand told the then Colonel
Charles de Gaulle "When I've been beaten here, England won't
wait a week before negotiating with the Reich."
He had got it wrong. For England would
stand up to Hitler and the Nazis, and face the war alone. The
Battle of France was over and The Battle of Britain was about
to begin.
Face The War Alone reflects on the
frustration of recent events and the loneliness of the struggle
which was about to start, with the fall
of France the wing of the Nazi Eagle would now cast its evil
shadow over Britain.
So in time the memories
are wasted,
and all of the lies that cut me deep inside.
And now the only way through, taken my heart,
and burned it inside out.
So many friends with so much good advice.
The pain will disappear, and so I face the war alone,
and I want, no one, I feel so much.
Because its wasted, how can you face me?
You couldn't make me hate you any more.
It's wasted, it's wasted, how can you face me?
Given me heaven then you cut me down.
It's wasted.
And so I find, the hopes for you were wasted,
a part of the soul is dark, that used to be.
The light of hope and glory.
People you know, you turned me inside out.
I'm not gonna share the great longevity,
the dreams will never be.
And so I'll face them all alone.
And I want, no one, I feel, that it's wasted.
How can they face me?
You couldn't make me hate you any more.
It's wasted, it's wasted, how can you face me?
Given me heaven then you cut me down.
It's wasted.
Winston Churchill:
"What General Weygand has called The Battle of France is over.
The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Hitler knows that he
will have to break us in this island, or lose the war. If we can
stand up to him, all Europe may be free. The light of the world
may move forward, to broad Sunlit uplands. But if we fail... then
the whole world will sink into the abyss of a new dark age. Let
us therefore brace ourselves to our duty... So bear ourselves,
that if the British Empire and Commonwealth lasts for a thousand
years, men will still say 'This was their finest hour'! (The complete
speech within ' The
Fall Of France' page).
