January 11th

Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Sorokin died of pneumonia aged 44. Sorokin served as back-up to Boris Yegorov for the Voskhod 1 mission on the 12th October 1964.

June 1st

Jimmy Carter, campaigning for President, spoke of growing up behind "an invisible wall of racial segregation," Los Angeles, California, USA.

July 20th

NASA's Viking I probe, launched the pervious year landed on Mars.

September 3rd

NASA's Viking II probe, launched the previous year landed on Mars.

September.

The Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung) died in China.

November.

Jimmy Carter became the new President of the United States of America.

James Callaghan succeeded Harold Wilson as the Labour Party leader and the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Werner Heisenberg, German physicist who developed 'Quantum Theory' and the 'Uncertainty Principle' died. He won the Nobel Prize in 1932, and during WWII he worked on the Nazis' nuclear program.

Bill Gates & Paul Allen found Traf-O-Data, a company to write BASIC computer programs. They later renamed the company, "Microsoft".

In Soweto, South Africa, schoolchildren rioted.
