space pioneer Mikhail Klavdievich Tikhonravov died. He
was a Soviet aerospace engineer, one of the founders of the
Soviet space programme. Involved with Sputnik and Vostok,
among others.

Gerald Ford announced the pardon of former President Richard
Nixon.
Zhukov
(Georgi Konstantinvich) died. He defended Moscow in 1941 from
the Nazis. Took charge and defeated the Nazis at Stalingrad
in 1942, the siege of Leningrad, and eventually conquered Berlin.
The
Conservatives lost the general election due to an economic and
industrial crisis. The Labour party won the election and its
leader James Callaghan replaced Edward Heath as the new Prime
Minister.
Turkey
clashed with Greece when Turkish troops invaded Cyprus.
The
dictatorship in Portugal was ended.
Isabelita
Perón became the President of Argentina.
Emperor
of Ethiopia Haile Selassie was deposed from power by Marxists.
