January 10th

Soviet cosmonaut Pavel Belyaev died aged 44. Belyaev was commander of the Voskhod 2 mission that saw Alexey Leonov be the first man to walk in space on the 18th - 19th March 1965.

April
11th - 17th

NASA's third Moon mission, and near fatal disaster, Apollo 13. The crew of James Lovell, John Swigert and Fred Haise were brought back safely to Earth after the spacecraft developed major problems.

April 30th

US troops entered Cambodia and struck at Communist bases.

May 4th

Four students were killed by National Guardsmen during antiwar protests at Kent State Univ. in Ohio, USA.

Conservative politican Edward Heath became the new British Prime Minister.

Tonga, Fiji gained independence.

Heart pacemakers were used for the first time.
