probe Luna 9 became the first soft landing on the Moon.

Soviet
cosmonaut Grigory Nelyubov was killed by a train. Nelyubov
served as back-up for Yuri Gagarin and the Vostok 1 mission.

NASA
astronaut Elliott See died. He was the back-up crew for
the Gemini 5 mission, and the command pilot for the Gemini
9 flight. But was killed in St. Louis, Missouri, in the
crash of a T-38 jet.
July 31st
England
won the World Cup trophy by beating West Germany 4-2 at Wembley,
London. England striker Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick, with
Martin Peters the other scorer of England's goal.
The
