Black activist Malcolm X was assassinated at a rally in Harlem, New York City, USA.

President Lyndon Johnson ordered the continuous bombardment of North Vietnam seven months after Congress passed the 'Gulf of Tonkin Resolution' which authorized the President to expand military activities in Southeast Asia.

184,300 US troops were deployed in Vietnam by the year's end.
