the US destroyer USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin. US forces
responded.

Tensions
grow in the Gulf of Tonkin as US forces were said to be under
attack from North Vietnamese torpedo boats. No attack occurred.
August 4th
In
response to the 'non-attack' President Johnson ordered US forces
to attack North Vietnamese naval bases. This became the first
US bombings of the Vietnam war.

Three
civil-rights workers that were reported missing in Mississippi
were found buried in an unmarked grave.

'Tonkin
Gulf Resolution' was passed in the US Congress. It became the
nearest act of a declaration of war by the United States on
North Vietnam.
