January 31st

The United States successfully launched its first satellite, Explorer I, into orbit under the guidance of Dr. Wernher von Braun.

February 17th

CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament), a nonpolitical protest group, was formed in Britain. Easter 1958 saw the first protest march to the Aldermaston, Britain's nuclear research facility.

March 17th

Launch of Vanguard 1 (USA). The first satellite that had solar batteries.

May 15th

Sputnik 3. The Soviet Union's first science satellite.

July 29th

President Eisenhower established the Birth of NASA by signing H.R. 12575, the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958.

October 7th

Project Mercury. America's first manned project announced.

China implemented the 'Great Leap Forward'. Chairman Mao promised China would catch up with Britain. The five-year plan caused famine in China at a cost of 30 million Chinese lives.

A Military coup in Iraq was instigated.
