Joseph V. Stalin unexpectedly died of a stroke at the age of 74. Was Stalin 'killed in a poison plot'?

May 29th

New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to climb and conquer Mount Everest, the world's highest peak.

June 2nd

Princess Elizabeth was crowned, and became Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

June 17th

East German people rebelled. Soviet troops crushed the uprising.

June 19th

Americans Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were found guilty of spying for the Soviet Union, and were executed.

July 27th

Korean War ceasefire. North Korea signed the armistice, which restored of the original border, but South Korea refused to take part.

August 12th

The Soviet Union detonated its first hydrogen bomb at Semipalatinsk. Although the blast had a yield of only 400 kilotons, the event being only nine months after the US hydrogen test, worried the west.

Marshal Tito became the President of Yugoslavia.

The structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) was discovered by English molecular biologist Francis Crick and American James Watson.

Egypt was proclaimed a republic after the revolution. A royalist coup took place Iran.
