the Ukraine. Bondarenko would become the first casualty of the
Soviet space programme.

Valentina
Tereshkova was born in the Yaroslavl region of Russia. Tereshkova
became the first woman to go into space during the Vostok
6 mission on the 16th - 19th June 1963.

resigned as Prime Minister. Neville Chamberlain became the new
the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Edward
Windsor who abdicated his throne, married the American divorcee
Wallis Simpson while in exile in France.
June 11th
Reginald
Joseph Mitchell designer of the British 'Spitfire' fighter plane
died aged 42. RJ Mitchell would not get to see his creation
in action, or know how important the 'Spitfire' became to the
defence of Britain.

Soviet
cosmonaut Irina Soloviova was born in the Tula Region
of Russia. Soloviova served as back-up to Valentina Tereshkova
for the Vostok 6 mission, 16th - 19th June 1963.

Soviet
cosmonaut Boris Yegorov was born in the city of Moscow,
Russia. Yegorov was a crew member of the Voskhod 1 mission
on the 12th October 1964.
A
full scale conflict erupted between Japan and China.
The
seat of the Basque Parliament, Guernica was destroyed by aerial
bombing during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso would later be
inspired by this event in the piece named 'Guernica'.
First
general elections were held in India.
The
Jet engine was tested in Great Britain.
The
Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA, was completed and
opened to the public.
Female
aviator Amelia Earhart died on her attempt to fly around the
world. Her plane disappeared while flying over the Pacific.
