February 23rd

Soviet cosmonaut Vasili Lazarev was born in the Kursk Region of Russia. Lazarev served as second back-up to Boris Yegorov for the Voskhod 1 mission on the 12th October 1964.

February 26th

Soviet cosmonaut Anatoly Filipchenko was born in the Voronezh Region, Russia. Served as back-up for Boris Volynov of the Soyuz 5 mission on the 15th January 1969.

March 14th

NASA astronaut Frank Borman was born in Gary, Indiana. Borman would take part in the Gemini 7 and Apollo 8 missions. Also served on the Apollo (Apollo 1) 204 Fire Investigation Board.

March 25th

NASA astronaut James Lovell was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Lovell would take part in the Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 missions.

June 1st

Soviet cosmonaut Georgy Dobrovolsky was born. Served as second back-up for Vladimir Shatalov on the Soyuz 4 mission on the 14th January 1969, but killed on the Soyuz 11 mission on 30th June 1971.

Collectivisation of Agriculture in the Soviet Union was established as Stalin introduced his first five year plan.

Fleming discovered penicillin.

The Trans-Pacific flight by the Southern Cross.

Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly the Atlantic, although only as a passenger.
