The General Strike hit and crippled Great Britain.

February 7th

Soviet spacecraft designer and cosmonaut Konstantin Feoktistov was born in the city of Voronezh, Russia. Feoktistov was a crew member of the Voskhod 1 mission on the 12th October 1964.

March 26th

The American rocket scientist Robert Goddard successfully launched the world's first liquid propellant rocket, using gasoline and liquid oxygen.

April 3rd

NASA astronaut Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom was born in Mitchell, Indiana, USA. Grissom became the second American into space in Mercury 4 (MR-4), July 1962. Also selected for Gemini 3 (GT-3) and Apollo 1.

August 31st

Soviet cosmonaut Georgy Katys was born in the city of Moscow, Russia. Katys served as back-up to Konstantin Feoktistov on the Voskhod 1 mission on the 12th October 1964.

Hirohito became the Emperor of Japan.
