1917

January 17th

Vasili Pavlovich Mishin was born. Along with Sergei Korolev, Mishin played a key managerial role in the early developments of the Soviet space programme. A major supporter of the Soviet N1 Moon rocket.

March 2nd

The Russian people rose up and Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate. A provisional government took control of Russia.

April 2nd

Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany, the declaration was made before a joint session of Congress, and brought the United States into World War 1.

November 6th

The Bolshevik uprising began in Russia. Supporters of Lenin stormed the Winter Palace. Known as the 'October Revolution' as the date was October 24th by the old style 'Julian' calendar used in Russia in 1917.

Count von Zeppelin died. Von Zeppelin was the designer of the airship which first flew in 1900. Used During WWI on bombing raids on England.

The Allies captured Jerusalem and Baghdad from Turkish forces.

The Balfour Declaration supported a Jewish homeland.
