The first celebration of ANZAC Day. ANZAC is an acronym of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

The battle of the Somme was waged on the bloody fields of France. The Allied offensive cost thousands of lives on both sides. The Allies advanced between 6-8 miles at a cost of 600,000 men.

French and German forces clashed at the Battle of Verdun.

December 16th

Rasputin (Russian 'Dissolute') (born Grigory Efimovich Novykh), illiterate son of a peasant , was murdered. His assassins lured him into a trap, shot him and then threw his body into the river Neva.

December 18th

Rasputin's frozen body was found under the ice of the river Neva.

December 22nd

Rasputin was buried.

Liberal leader Herbert Asquith was replaced by Lloyd George as the Liberal party leader, and the British Prime Minister.

Arab revolt against Ottomans began.

The Easter Rising exploded in Dublin, Ireland.

The Planets by Holst was written. The first birth-control clinic was opened in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
