March 23rd

Dr. Wernher von Braun was born. The controversial German rocket scientist who developed the V2 rocket for the Nazis, and was a major influence in placing a man on the Moon for the Americans in 1969.

April 15th

The unsinkable RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton in England to New York in the USA. The ship collided with an iceberg off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland with the lost of 1,517 lives.

Wilbur Wright died. One of the brothers who was first to succeed in powered flight in the Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903. Wilbur's flight lasted 59 seconds, and managed 852ft.

War erupted in the Balkans.

The Chinese National Party (Kuomintang) was founded.

The African National Congress was founded.
