April 7th

Mount Vesuvius erupted and devastated Naples in Italy.

April 18th

A devastating earthquake, estimated at 7.8, hit the city of San Francisco, USA. The earthquake destroyed much of the city, killing at least 3000 and left nearly 300,000 homeless.

September 18th

A typhoon with tsunami killed an estimated 10,000 people in Hong Kong.

November 3rd

SOS became the international distress signal.

December 10th

US President Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the peace treaty in the Russo-Japanese War 1905.

Australia acquired Papua.

A revolution exploded in Persia.

The Le Mans motor circuit race is founded in France.
