Russo-Japanese
War. With the decline of the Chinese Empire, Japan broke off
negotiations and diplomatic relations with Russia. The two countries
fought over Manchuria, Korea and China, which had been occupied
by the Russians since 1900.

a declaration of war by Japan, the Russian naval base at Port
Arthur (now Lüshun) north-east China, came under siege
from Japanese forces.
March
4th
Russo-Japanese War. Russian troops in Korea retreated toward
Manchuria followed by 100,000 advancing Japanese troops.

The Entente Cordiale treaty was signed between the Great Britain
and France.

US
physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer was born. Oppenheimer worked
on the Manhattan
Project during WWII. The success of the project led
to the atomic bombs used at Hiroshima
and Nagasaki,
August 1945.

The first legendary Rolls-Royce was manufactured.

Spanish artist Salvador Dali was born.

The Trans-Siberian railway was completed.

A
Japanese infantry charge failed to take the Russian naval base
at Port Arthur (now Lüshun) north-east China.
October

The Russian Baltic Fleet fired on British trawlers mistaking
them for Japanese torpedo boats in the North Sea, 'Dogger Bank
incident'.
November
8th
President Theodore Roosevelt defeats Alton B. Parker in the
U.S. presidential election.
