American aviator Charles Lindbergh was born. Lindbergh would be the first man to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

February 27th

American writer John Steinbeck was born. A future Nobel Prize laureate and author of 'The Catcher and the Rye'.

March 7th

South African Boers won their last battle over British forces in the Second Boer War, with the capture of a British general and a small troop of 200 British soldiers.

May 20th

Cuba gained independence from the United States of America.

May 31st

The signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging ended the Second Boer War between the British and the South African Boers.

July 11th

Lord Salisbury retired as the British prime minister.

August 9th

The coronation of Prince Edward took place, who was crowned King Edward VII at Westminster Abbey in London, England.

August 22nd

Theodore Roosevelt became the first American President to ride in an automobile when he rode in a Columbia Electric Victoria through Hartford, Connecticut.

November 30th

Kid Curry Logan was sentenced to 20 years hard labour. Logan was Butch Cassidy's second-in-command of the Wild Bunch gang.

December 31st

Scott, Shackleton and Wilson reached the furthest southern point achieved by man at 82°17'S.
